A recent survey indicates that 60.2% of South Koreans view marriage as non-essential. Economic instability is a significant reason for this sentiment, especially among women.


Survey Shows Marriage Considered Unnecessary by Majority in South Korea

Yesterday's research showed that six out of ten working people in South Korea consider marriage non-essential. According to data from the South Korean agency Yonhap, a survey conducted on the platform "Enkroot" among 653 people revealed that 60.2% of respondents believe that marriage is not necessary.

Among men, 50.3% consider marriage essential, while among women this percentage was 24.7%. Among those who consider marriage non-essential, 39.6% stated that they simply do not see the importance of marriage, while 23.7% indicated that the main reason for not wanting to get married is economic instability.

In 2024, the number of marriages in South Korea increased by 14.9%, as more people decided to get married after the COVID-19 pandemic; however, overall, the number of marriages has been declining over the past two decades.
