A court in South Korea has ruled that Samsung must pay compensation to owners of Galaxy S22 phones after it was found that the company did not clearly inform users about the impact of the Game Optimizing Service on their phone's performance. In 2022, Samsung launched the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra phones, equipped with the GOS feature designed to prevent the phone from overheating during gaming and heavy tasks by reducing the performance of the GPU, lowering the screen resolution, and throttling other resources. Although the idea was for protection, users felt that the company did not clarify the feature's impact on performance and did not give them the option to disable it, according to the How to Geek website. Users complained that Samsung advertised phones with a certain level of performance but then restricted it without notice, which many considered misleading advertising. This complaint led to a lawsuit seeking damages for the performance limitations on the phones. Users' Lawsuit and Compensation 1,882 users filed a lawsuit against Samsung, demanding compensation of 300,000 Korean won (equivalent to $201.75) for each user, after it was revealed that the GOS feature was not mentioned to them when they purchased the phone and could not be disabled for several years after its launch. After four years of trial, the Supreme Court in Seoul issued its final ruling on March 18, 2026, ordering a forced settlement on Samsung to pay undisclosed compensation to the users who joined the lawsuit, following the failure of previous mediation sessions.
