OpenAI's Strategic Move in South Korea's AI Landscape

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman highlights Korea as a critical market for AI, exploring partnerships with Korean tech giants like Kakao and SoftBank to boost investments in AI infrastructure.

OpenAI's Strategic Move in South Korea's AI Landscape

OpenAI's General Director Sam Altman stated that Korea plays an important role in global technological processes. He noted that energy, polypower providers, and internet companies make this country an important place for OpenAI's activities, and pointed out the growing demand for artificial intelligence production in South Korea.

OpenAI announced plans to develop artificial intelligence products for South Korea with the chat application operator Kakao, revealing a second major partnership with emerging Asian partners this week. Additionally, Altman announced a partnership with Japan's SoftBank group during his tour of Asia and plans to visit India, where, according to sources, he intends to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Like SoftBank, Kakao stated that it will use technology developed by ChatGPT creator for its products. Kakao, which manages the main mobile application for communication KakaoTalk in South Korea, which has a 97% market share, has expanded into areas like e-commerce, payments, and gaming, stating that it is interested in artificial intelligence and messaging.

Altman also emphasized that many Korean companies play an important role in the ecosystem of the project to establish the Stargate data center in the USA. It is reported that later that same day he is planning to meet with Samsung Chairman Jay Lee and SoftBank's general director Masayoshi Son in Seoul.

Companies SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics produce high-performance memory chips used in artificial intelligence processors. Last month, it was announced that private investments amounting to 500 billion dollars for funding artificial intelligence infrastructure will be made. Positioned as a new driver of growth, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle plan to launch a data center project called Stargate.

Altman declined to specify details, citing the confidentiality of the negotiations regarding the partnership. During his visit, he met with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won.

Marcos announces SSS office opening in Seoul for Filipino workers

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the opening of a new Social Security System (SSS) office in Seoul, South Korea, ensuring that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will have easier access to essential government services. Speaking before members of the Filipino community in Busan, the President said the SSS office, located at the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, will handle membership registration, contribution payments, and claims processing. "I want to assure you, hindi namin kayo nakakalimutan." "The Filipino worker is as good a worker as you will find anywhere in the world," he said. He reiterated his administration’s long-term goal of making overseas employment a choice rather than a necessity by creating more opportunities within the Philippines. The President arrived in South Korea earlier this week to attend the 32nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju. "We are working hard to make sure government services reach you, all the way here in Korea or wherever you are," Marcos said. He emphasized that the initiative is part of his administration’s broader goal to make government services more accessible to Filipinos abroad and to strengthen social protection programs for OFWs. Marcos also revealed that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will open a Philippine Consulate General in Busan next year, serving Filipinos in Busan, Ulsan, and Gimhae. The new office will process passports, civil registry documents, and other consular services. "This is an important step to bring government services closer to Filipinos here in Busan," he said. Expressing gratitude to overseas Filipinos for their hard work and contributions, Marcos highlighted that they remain vital to the nation’s progress.
